Held four Workshops - the attendees had a higher than average number of women (around 25%) and African American (20%) participation than industry averages. The age of workshop participants ranged from 16 to 55 with a high number in late twenties and early thirties looking for a better career.
January 2018 - May 2018
Worked with ACE Mentors, a high school architecture/construction/engineering mentor program, and Habitat for Humanity on a welding construction project that won the participants over $5000 in scholarships.
Gulf States Shipping Consortium

Bria Sativa Aguayo, our founder, presented at the Gulf States Shipping Consortium’s fall meeting in New Orleans, “Women in the Trades: An Untapped Resource”. The event focused on recruiting and retaining skilled employees. It was attended by shipping industry representatives, large and small.
Sustainable Living Empowerment Conference
Aguayo also presented at the 6th Annual Sustainable Living Empowerment Conference in Newark, New Jersey on Green Jobs which includes a fast growing renewable energy sector that employs welders.
Aguayo has had an active social media presence, launching a Becoming a Welder, Inc. Facebook page in late August. The BAW Facebook page has been a great way for people to ask welding questions and get more information on events.
May 2017 - Present
Aguayo teaches beginner welding classes at makerspaces, such as Decatur Makers, to keep in contact with various communities and reach new demographics and youth.
Atlanta Journal Constitution

Aguayo was featured in the Atlanta Journal Constitution published on May 18th. The article “How can we convince girls welding is hot?” discussed girls learning trades.
June & October 2018
One of our workshops was featured in the June Welding Journal’s Section News and Aguayo was also highlighted as a Member Educator in the Society News section.
Collaborated with Decatur Makers and International Rescue Committee to expose refugees to the welding industry.
Sharing the message
Traveled to Newark, New Jersey and North Texas to build relationships and create collaboration opportunities with AWS sections and organizations that could benefit from welding knowledge.
